EMKR Seeking shelter from ALPHA

Red Flags at Emcore
After seeing the severe drop in the price of EMKR shares today I decided to investigate a little further as to the result of the near 10% one day drop. First I read through EMKR's response to the article "Red Flags at Emcore" posted on the blog Seeking Alpha. Apparently this specific posting really effected the share price but after reviewing a number of stocks I found the same gap down open similar to Emcore EMKR.

What I found really interesting was the other post Here Comes the Sun: EMCORE Should Prove Profitable on the blog Seeking Alpha that was posted on March 12 2008 just a week prior. Interesting how quickly Emcore shares EMKR went from a BUY to SELL in such a short period of time based on the differing views of the blog posting authors.

We'll follow up on this story in the near future but don't hesitate to keep a close eye on the charts of Emcore which can be found on the Eco Stock Trader Stockcharts page.

Stunning Solar Building Will Generate More Power Than It Needs

Stunning Solar Building Will Generate More Power Than It Needs
The Masdar Headquarters building will produce more power than it needs (an energy positive building). In fact, the solar roof (one of the largest in the world) will be constructed first, and it will power the construction of the rest of the building. The video link on this page has a great view of the sun-infused interior.

Hi folks,

Clearly lots of volatility over the past few sessions creating some very interesting buying and selling opportunities. While we are still in cash when it comes to long term trades we have opened up a few short term trades to take advantage of the deeply oversold state. The market is showing signs of classic capitulation and we are happy to be buyers when we there's a general sense of fear dominating the media airwaves.

Are the Stocks in Your Portfolio Powered by Solar Energy?

Please click here to visit the EcoStockTrader Blog Homepage

EcoStockTrader on Stock Charts

Are the Stocks in Your Portfolio Powered by Solar Energy? The Wilderhill Eco Clean Energy Stock Index not only tracks the investment opportunities that comprise the future of energy independence they harvest considerable electric power from the sun via solar PV (PhotoVoltaic = electricity generating) panels.

http://www.wildershares.com/solar.php

Many of the energy options in the WilderHill Index are technologies that we not only address in a technical sense, but also utilize everyday. We believe practical knowledge-gained can assist in discussing clean energy ahead. For example we are intimately familiar with how solar power may be sensible today. This is more than theoretical; at our 1-acre San Diego site, we utilize several different systems to:
  1. generate electricity and
  2. provide all building hot water.

For example we're harvesting considerable electric power from the sun via solar PV (PhotoVoltaic = electricity generating) panels. This array is 'grid-intertie' meaning our buildings are connected to the power-grid; during daylight hours we're generally making much more power than we consume and automatically 'sell' power back into the grid. Thus in daylight our electric meter actually runs backwards. At night it's reversed; we 'buy' power from the utility-and the meter runs the opposite direction. Grid-interconnect means we're able to avoid cost of batteries while it allows rebates by the State of California. As shown next for the solar PV costs, this solar PV performs well in cost/benefit projections, return on investment, and in practice.

This 3.85 kilowatt (kW) solar PV system is calculated to achieve payback in approximately 10 years (see solar PV system costs). This short time to our payback is mainly due to *California State solar subsidies, and *the application of time of use metering by our local utility. Certainly, the upfront costs for the system were significant. However we estimate after generating solar power for 10 years, we'll have recouped a full return on investment and so thereafter most of our electricity is made at no charge. That stability contrasts with highly dynamic electric utility rates that usually go up over time, and it smartly will go on for years after cost amortization. Solar panels are the main cost and they carry a manufacturer's Limited Warranty of 25 years — notably a longer panel life is expected, given the performance of old panels in service for decades. (The single 3.85 kW Inverter carries a shorter life and it will have to be replaced). We expect to see years of profitable PV operation and thus feel without any undue sentiment, that this can be a sensible return on investment.

So far this innovative system has been noteworthy. In 2003 we installed 21 then-new Sharp 185 watt panels (see spec sheet) in three strings, with a 14.2% module efficiency rating. The panels made in the USA are among the most efficient in a consumer product, employing a rather unique and power-dense mono-crystalline design. The panels were matched with a Sharp Sunvista 3,500 watt inverter (along with two web-based real-time monitoring systems) in one of the first such applications then in California.

As illustrated by daily monitoring data in detailed graphs, we're obtaining module efficiencies of ~5% to 10% over the manufacturer rating. Inverter efficiencies are also measurably high and in spring to summer we can generate over 20 kilowatt hours per day. During winter months, with fewer daylight hours and less irradiation overall, we generate perhaps half that amount.

Solar PV panels being installed, 2003

Besides solar PV for electric power we are using two different solar water heating systems. Both are thermal and so rely on collecting and focusing the sun's warmth to heat water. First there's a small primary system that's completely passive and does not require pumps thus increasing overall efficiency; this also extends expected system life. A larger secondary system uses an AC pumping motor (powered by the PV array+inverter) when other hot water is needed. (We are in planning for separate PV solar panels that efficiently run on a DC motor, simply pumping water to the heating array automatically when the sun is shining).

Smaller, passive thermal water heating

Larger panels for heating pumped-water.

We monitor building energy demands too-as well as power generated-in part because it's as useful to reduce demand via efficiency (and avoid need for much power in the first place), as to is to make energy renewably. Several solutions have been brilliantly simple. We e.g. use compact fluorescent lights instead of more traditional and hot incandescent bulbs. This mitigates too a need for cooling that's brought on by inefficient bulbs in the first place. For instance, one large lighting structure is rated by the manufacturer at 720 watts: by simply installing more efficient bulbs, we consume ~80% less power for a similar amount of light.

I'd like to thank Daniel for his comment and link to this very informative report on Geothermal Energy: Energy Special Report

Here's a quick highlight of what's included in this very informative report about Geothermal Energy -

Geothermal Energy -Investing in Heat
I would like to take a look at another way to invest in heat. That is, we will look at a company that is part of the industry that extracts stored heat energy from the crust of the Earth -- namely, geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is heat (the “thermal” part of the word) derived from the Earth (the “geo” part). Geothermal energy is the energy contained in the hot rocks, and the hot fluids that fill the fractures and pores within the rocks, of the Earth’s crust. Under the right conditions, geothermal energy can be utilized to generate electricity, and this is why we are interested.

Clean tech gurus eye geothermal, advanced solar tech Marketwatch

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Deal makers in the so-called clean technology business are mostly brushing aside recent market weakness and forecast a healthy flow of venture capital and other transactions in the solar, biofuel and wind energy sectors for the remainder of the year.

"Every area has momentum right now," said Dan Pullman, vice president at investment bank McNamee Lawrence & Co. "You see it solar, you see it wind, alternative transportation, fuels, and plug-in vehicles."

Michael Carboy, clean energy analyst at Signal Hill, said the health of the sector has little to do with week-to-week market fluctuations in equity prices.

"The appeal of the sector has nothing to do with market valuation -- it has everything to do with demand drivers on the national political and economic and global levels," Carboy said. "We have a need to more efficiently use energy, and get more energy from renewable sources. Those don't change based on market valuation. Corrections are an opportunity to look at names thought of as too expensive in the past."

Carboy has buy ratings on Sunpower (SPWR), Suntech Power (STP), and hold ratings on Evergreen (ESLR) and First Solar (FSLR).

In the power infrastructure business, Carboy assigned a buy ratings to American Superconductor (AMSC) and Zoltek (ZOLT), a maker of carbon fiber used by wind turbine makers.

Carboy sees continued investment by venture capitalists in the sector, especially in energy storage and electric grid efficiency specialists, as well as new solar energy technology.

However, he's bearish on the ethanol stocks because they're subject to swings both in corn prices and gasoline prices.

"You're playing the spread between the commodity market and the energy market," he said. "It's a dangerous game."

Jeffrey Saut, market strategist with Raymond James, sounded a word of caution on solar and other alternative energy shares, however.

"If you bet the farm, you better have two farms," Saut said. "Despite what the clean tech people will tell you, if crude oil goes down, the price of anything related to alternative energy comes down with it. Most don't stand on their own feet without high energy prices, or without government tax benefits."

Saut also said he likes solar energy long-term, is bearish on ethanol, and wonders why free energy from geothermal heat isn't more widely used.

Pullman of McNamee Lawrence said obstacles to clean tech include the Bush administration, which plans to veto the recently-passed House Energy Bill; as well as the high cost of silicon for solar energy panel makers. Players in the clean tech space expect more action from Washington - such as carbon trading legislation - after the presidential elections in 2008.

On the ethanol front, Pullman sees a pact coming that would allow more sugar cane-based ethanol to be imported into the U.S. from Brazil.

Jeff Lipton, managing director of the Clean Tech Group at Jefferies (JEF), said investors should approach the sector with some caution in the short-term given the summer sell-off in the broader market.

Looking toward the rest of the year, "I'd expect to see more transactions in terms of IPOs and secondaries," he said.

First Solar, for example, just set plans to raise a whopping $1 billion in a stock offering. On the IPO front, GT Solar International Inc. has filed a $200 million IPO to boost its business as a maker of manufacturing equipment for the solar power industry.

Jefferies is eying new players in the cellulostic ethanol -- fuel made from grass and other plant matter, as a more cost-effective source for energy, Lipton said.

Venture deals on the clean tech radar screen include a $78 million round for Energy Photovoltaics, a $70 million round for GreenVolts and a $60 million infusion for BullMoose.

To boost its presence in the space, Jefferies hired Paul Clegg as senior equity research analyst covering clean tech companies, including nuclear technology.

Clegg most recently worked as a senior equity research analyst at Natexis Bleichroder covering alternative energy, prior to which he covered equity and fixed income securities at Calyon Securities.
